Lygia Valcourt is what most of us would call a gentle soul. When you meet her you just want to hug her and to protect her, but don’t let her diminutive stature fool you, she is a warrior, and a survivor.
Lygia’s tenacious spirit and fight was evident at an early age. She overcame polio at the age of 9 months, which left her with partial facial paralysis. As a young woman in her native Nicaragua, she was injured in a horrific bombing by an ex-boyfriend as retaliation when she refused to marry him, causing her catastrophic muscle loss, disfigurement and pain to her back.
Refusing to be silenced, she became a respected lawyer, fighting back against both domestic violence and domestic terrorism, taking on her father’s assassins and persecuting them for premeditated murder. When the assailants sought vengeance against her young daughters, Lygia fled with her daughters to Canada, arriving in 2002.
Speaking no English, Lygia started working as a cleaner, quickly picking up the language and investing herself in her new community. She met her wonderful husband in church a few years later. Over the years she has become recognized as a much-loved business owner, volunteer and friend to all she meets, especially in the Mompreneur community she holds dear.
Lygia has combined her passion and support of women into two successful businesses devoted to elevating women, making them feel beautiful, confident and capable: She is a successful Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay Canada, while also running her primary business as a bookkeeper and tax preparer.
She has dedicated her life to her faith, her family, her loving husband, daughters, grandchildren, friends, and community. She has an ever-present smile that draws you in and makes you feel like family. When asked how she maintains her optimism and faith, she says that she determined early on that she would fight hate and violence with love and the feminine spirit, “I am proud of myself because I am a survivor of past domestic violence that I never allowed to destroy me or change my heart.”
Her dream is to finish her memoir as a legacy and inspiration for her daughters and younger generations so they always remember that no matter what anyone does to you, you know that no one can take away your beauty, your resilience, or extinguish the love you carry within.
